Ajax PT Aspen - Experts in Ski Injuries and Sports Medicine

As the authors of the American Physical Therapy Association’s (APTA) course Physical Therapist Management of the Downhill Skier, we literally wrote the book on how clinicians treat mountain athletes. Our expertise is trusted at the highest levels of the sport; this past winter, we were proud to be hired by the U.S. Ski Team to support their World Cup athletes. We’ve distilled this professional-grade research and clinical experience into the free resources below to help you stay healthy all season long.

Vermont Ski Safety Program

Evidence-Based

The following education was researched and found to reduce ski injuries by 62% in ski instructors and patrollers across 20 ski resorts in VT. For more information and content from the source, visit https://vermontskisafety.com/

While Skiing:

  •  Avoid high risk behavior
  • Routinely correct poor skiing technique
  • Recognize and respond quickly and effectively to potentially dangerous situations
  • If you fall, don’t try to get up until you’ve stopped sliding
  • Keep your arms up and forward
  • Don’t jump unless you know where and how to land
  • Land on both skis and keep your knees flexed
  • Maintain balance and control

While falling:

Keep every joint in your body flexed moderately. Keep legs together. Keep your chin against your chest. Keep arms up and forward. Be prepared to use your arms to protect your head. After the fall, if you don’t stop immediately, get into a position that allows you to see where you are going. If you attempt to stop yourself by engaging your skis, resist the instinct to fully straighten your legs.
